Development of the WHO 1st International Standard ADAMTS13, plasma, was initiated  during the SSC/ISTH VWF sub-committee meeting in Kyoto in 2011.

The project leaders are Johanna Kremer Hovinga (Bern University Hospital, Switzerland) and Tony Hubbard (NIBSC, UK).

The primary objective is the development of a lyophilised pooled normal plasma standard with assigned values for ADAMTS13 function and antigen in International Units (IU) where the IU approximates to the amount of ADAMTS13 in 1 ml of normal, pooled plasma.

The definitive collaborative study for value assignment is scheduled to begin in September 2013 with formal establishment of the standard by WHO in October 2014.
