Milwaukee Hosts International Scientific Healthcare Conference

1,500 attendees to address advancing research, diagnosis and treatment of

patients with bleeding and clotting disorders

MILWAUKEE— (June 18, 2014)  Advanced research and treatment of bleeding disorders, heart attacks, strokes and thrombosis is on the agenda when the Wisconsin Center welcomes another major international convention June 23-26. The 60th Anniversary SSC conference of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) is expected to draw 1,500 clinicians, researchers, educators, healthcare professionals and industry partners from 65 countries to Milwaukee.

“The ISTH conference is the foremost scientific meeting of physicians and scientists to exchange the latest in scientific innovation and advance the overall understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and bleeding disorders,” according to Dr. Robert R. Montgomery, President of this SSC2014 Meeting.  Dr. Montgomery is Senior Investigator at BloodCenter of Wisconsin’s Blood Research Institute and Professor of Pediatric Hematology / Medical College of Wisconsin.

“Drawing these visitors to Milwaukee could only have been accomplished through the quality of our scientific and research community here at BloodCenter of Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin.  We are honored that four years ago the ISTH selected Milwaukee to host this meeting from numerous applications.”  The Local Organizing Committee also includes Dr. Gilbert C. White, II, Vice President for the Meeting, and Drs. Peter Newman, Debra Newman, Thomas Abshire, Roy Silverstein, Alan Mast and Hartmut Weiler – all of the BloodCenter and Medical College.

Milwaukee joins a prestigious international line-up of meeting destinations such as Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where the ISTH met last year, and Toronto, Canada and Montpellier, France, the hosts in 2015 and 2016.

VISIT Milwaukee estimates an economic impact to the Milwaukee area of $3.2 million.

ISTH will celebrate its 60th Anniversary in style at Discovery World on Tuesday, June 24, with a gala event, featuring performances by Native American Indigenous people from Wisconsin and special fireworks display at 9:45 p.m.

During the four day meeting, many international speakers will make presentations on a variety of topics, including Dr. Howard Jacob, Director of the Human and Molecular Genetics Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin, will address the topic of “personalized medicine,” defined as the use of genetic data to personalize how a patient’s medical care is going to be delivered.  Another plenary speaker is William Ouwehand, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Experimental Haematology, University of Cambridge, England, who will speak on the topic of Genomic Medicine in the Care Path of Patients with Bleeding Disorders.
