Ask the Associate Editor is a new series of short question and answer sessions with the Associate Editors of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH). This month, we feature Mary Cushman, a JTH Associate Editor since 2007 and ISTH member for more than 20 years. She is also currently a member of the Board of Directors for the American Heart Association. Learn about Mary below:
ISTH: Where are you from?
MC: I was born in Massachusetts, USA, and now I live in Vermont, USA.
ISTH: What is your job title and expertise?
MC: I am the Professor of Medicine and Pathology & Director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Program at the University of Vermont. My expertise is care of patients with thrombosis and research in cardiovascular epidemiology.
ISTH: What is your biggest challenge in your work?
MC: Trying to be in more than one place at a time!
ISTH: What has guided your career choices?
MC: I would say that the people I have met at early stages of my career were most important in guiding my direction.
ISTH: Who is/was the most influential person/people in your life and why?
MC: My parents. They taught me the importance of hard work and persistence.
ISTH: What advice would you give to someone just beginning their career?
MC: Once you figure out what your goal is, you need to buckle down and go for it!
ISTH: When did you become an Associate Editor of JTH and why?
MC: 2007. I was asked to do it and chose to accept since I am fascinated by the peer review process. And I wanted to learn more about how to run a journal successfully.
ISTH: Share a memory from an ISTH Congress or other ISTH event.
MC: My first Congress was in Jerusalem. It was an amazing trip and opportunity to meet colleagues from around the world. Unfortunately, I got food poisoning and became pretty sick during a post Congress tour!
ISTH: Describe yourself in three words or less.
MC: Energetic and committed.
ISTH: What do you like to do with your free time?
MC: I like to spend time with family, golf and ski. And I follow my sports teams – Go Boston!
ISTH: In a different life, what would your profession be?
MC: Hopefully the same!
