Clinicians and laboratory specialists from around the
world gathered  in London to learn the latest science

The ISTH and the World Federation of Hemophilia held a “Training the Trainers” joint workshop on laboratory diagnosis in December, 2014 at the Royal Free Hospital in London, UK. The workshop brought together professionals from 10 different countries to learn about bleeding disorders and thrombosis and included seminars as well as laboratory demonstrations. ISTH sponsored the thrombosis speakers.

“The workshop had very interesting lectures about methods in hemostasis,” said participant Katarina Petrovic, a Senior Laboratory Technician at the Laboratory for Hemostasis, Clinical Center of Serbia. “I learned new methods which are not in use in my clinic and shared these new findings with my superiors.”

This workshop series teaches clinicians and senior laboratory personnel from developing countries how to train laboratory staff in their own countries, including the proper techniques and methods for diagnosing thrombosis and a variety of bleeding disorders.

“The lectures described a kind of different approach in method execution compared to what we are doing in our laboratory,” Petrovic said. “This is probably the greatest value of the workshop from my point of view because it can be shared within the community and implemented in everyday work.”

The program was planned by ISTH members Anne Riddell and Steve Kitchen as well as Sukesh Nair, Chair of WFH Laboratory Sciences Committee. Several other ISTH members also participated as speakers or trainers: Flip de Groot, Anthony Hubbard, Keith Gomez, Katrien Devreese, Peter Cooper, Ton van den Besselaar, and Anne Riddell. WFH staff members Assad Haffar and Stephanie Pineda organized the event.
