Ask the Associated Editor is a monthly series of short question and answer sessions with Associate Editors of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH). This month we feature Walter Ageno, an Associate Editor since 2014, and President of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC).
ISTH: Where are you from?
ISTH: Where do you work and what is your job title and expertise?
WA: I work at Academic Hospital, and I am an Internist, Director of a Short Medical Stay Unit and of a Thrombosis Center. I am also an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine. My main interest is in vascular medicine.
ISTH: What is your biggest challenge in your work?
WA: Clinical activity as well as organization of research activity.
ISTH: What do you see as your biggest triumph in your work?
WA: Helping younger colleagues to build a successful career.
ISTH: What has guided your career choices?
WA: Interest, curiosity, but also chance.
ISTH: Who is/was the most influential person in your life and why?
WA: Many. I try to learn from as many persons as possible.
ISTH: What advice would you give to someone just beginning their career?
WA: To believe in what they are doing.
ISTH: When did you become an Associate Editor of the JTH and why?
WA: Last July after having been appointed president-elect of the SSC.
ISTH: What has surprised you about being an Associate Editor for the JTH?
ISTH: How has membership in the ISTH helped your career?
WA: Quite a lot.
ISTH: What was your first ISTH Congress like?
WA: Quite strange because I was working in Canada, and I attended my first ISTH in Italy (Florence) as a foreigner.
ISTH: What was your favorite Congress and why?
WA: Probably the last one in Amsterdam. It was a very good congress with a lot of room for younger researchers. It was very inspiring.
ISTH: What do you like to do with your free time?
WA: Stay with my family as much as I can.
ISTH: In a different life, what would your profession be?
WA: I would probably like to try a different one every new life.
ISTH: Do you have any personal mottos or sayings that you live by?
WA: Don’t crack under pressure.
