Ask the Associated Editor is a monthly series of short question and answer sessions with Associate Editors of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH). This month we feature Marcel Levi, an Associate Editor for more than a decade.
ISTH: Where are you from?
ML: Amsterdam, the Netherlands
ISTH: Where do you work? What is your job title and expertise?
ML: I am a Professor of Medicine and Dean Faculty of Medicine, Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam
ISTH: What is your biggest challenge in your work?
ML: Besides the big issues keeping an eye on details, people, small successes
ISTH: What do you see as your biggest triumph in your work?
ML: I can be really happy if a single patient is doing very well or is very statisfied with his/her care. Likewise, I can really celebrate an important publication by one of my PhD students.
ISTH: What has guided your career choices?
ML: My most important mentor was Prof. Jan Wouter ten Cate. Other important people were Harry Buller and Giancarlo Agnelli.
ISTH: Who is/was the most influential person in your life and why?
ML: My father, he was my big example.
ISTH: What advice would you give to someone just beginning their career?
ML: Enjoy not only your success but also the way to your success.
ISTH: When did you become an Associate Editor of the JTH and why?
ML: More than 10 years ago, I guess. It is the most important and prestigious journal in our field.
ISTH: What is the most interesting/exciting article that you’ve seen in the JTH recently?
ML: I like all this new stuff on neutrophil extracellular traps.
ISTH: Share a memory from an ISTH Congress or other ISTH event.
ML: My first congress was in 1987 in Brussels, that was a very nice experience. I also remember the ISTH congress in 1989 in Japan, where I had my first big talk. I was practicing my talk in a beautiful Japanese park during that week together with my colleague Ton Lensing, who also had a big presentation there.
ISTH: Describe yourself in three words or less.
ML: Result-driven, impatient, easygoing.
ISTH: What do you like to do with your free time?
ML: Biking, eating/cooking, reading.
ISTH: In a different life, what would your profession be?
ML: Restaurant owner.
ISTH: Do you have any personal mottos or sayings that you live by?
ML: Always say YES.
