World Thrombosis Day: Resources, Events and Extraordinary Collaboration Around the Globe Planned for October 13

Watch the videos of the WTD Steering Committee's public service announcements in English, Spanish Japanese and Thai on the WTD website.

World Thrombosis Day is October 13, and more than 250 partners from across the globe are coming together along with the ISTH to raise awareness about thrombosis, and specifically, hospital-associated VTE.

If your institution, hospital, or society is not yet a partner, sign up today! Visit www.worldthrombosisday.org/join/ and become an official partner to connect and download resources for distribution in your own communities around the world.

Public Awareness Survey Shows Significant Gap in Global VTE Awareness

In a recent public awareness survey by Ipsos-Reid, the ISTH’s World Thrombosis Day initiative found a significant gap in global understanding and awareness of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), including signs, symptoms, risk factors and causes. Findings point to a need for increased attention and education globally to save lives and prevent and treat VTE. Responses were collected among 800 individuals in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Thailand, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States.

Overall, the proportion of respondents that were aware of thrombosis, DVT and PE (68%, 44% and 54%, respectively) was lower than the proportion that was aware of other thrombotic disorders, such as heart attack and stroke (88% and 85%, respectively), and health conditions such as hypertension, breast cancer, prostate cancer and AIDS (90%, 85%, 82% and 87%, respectively).

SSC Subcommittee on Factor VIII, IX and Rare Coagulation Disorders Seeks Comments

Safety Evaluation Study Design
The members of the “standardization of post-registration surveillance” project group drafted a minimal data collection scheme starting from the analysis of the available registries/databases. It aims at collecting information on safety of patients using standard or new drugs in order to carry on a post marketing surveillance. This document contains questions related to the period of post-registration study and also to a second longer period of observation. The first part should last 100 ED using the inhibitor testing schedule currently required by EMA for all patients who start to use a new product. The second part is the collection of information of any adverse event, i.e. every six months for a longer period of time (one to three years or for the entire life of patients).

Download the questionnaire and study design here. Members of this subcommittee can comment here or comments can be emailed to education@isth.org

Prophylaxis in Boys with Hemophilia
The aim of this recommendation is to provide evidenced guidance on when and how to start prophylaxis in boys with severe hemophilia without inhibitors.

Download the manuscript. Members of this subcommittee can comment here or comments can be emailed to education@isth.org.

New JTH DOAC and Hemophilia Compilations Offer Deeper Insights

JTH has recently introduced 'Compilations,' a new online feature that goes beyond the traditional publication of articles in any given issue or volume. Rather, these compilations are bundles of articles published in JTH on a particular subject. Compilations are accessible on the JTH website.

Each compilation is prepared by selecting all articles on the chosen subject for each year between 2010 and 2015. JTH publishes 400-500 articles annually, so the top five or six cited articles from each year were selected. Only those that generate the largest impact on the field are included in the compilation.

The first two compilations are on hemophilia and direct oral anticoagulants, and we have also grouped the monthly editorials together. Many other subjects can be considered in the future, and we welcome suggestions from our authors and readers for new compilations. Email jth@abdn.ac.uk with suggestions.
