A World of Awareness for Thrombosis
on October 13; Will You Help?



World Thrombosis Day, on October 13, is the signature awareness movement of the ISTH, and more than 300 partner organizations from 65 countries around the world are coming together to raise awareness of thrombosis, specifically, hospital-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE). 

If your institution, hospital, or society is not yet a partner, it's not too late. Sign up today! Visit www.worldthrombosisday.org/join/ and become an official partner.

Partners and Events 

The global World Thrombosis Day campaign is planning the following activities. The events include hospital information sessions, patient seminars, media outreach, community events such as runs/walks, social media outreach, free clinics, workshops, video displays, webinars and many more activities. Approximately 450 events are expected to take place around the world on/around October 13. Please plan to participate in the events below and spread the word. 

  • Participate in World Thrombosis Day Twitter Chats on October 13 at 16:00 UTC and October 20 at 18:00 UTC using the hashtag, #Clotchat.
  • Join us for the World Thrombosis Day Webinar on October 13 at 18:00 UTC: "Prevention and Treatment of Venous Thromboembolism During Pregnancy" with presenter Andra H. Coming Soon: Registration for SSC 2016 Opens October 28

 


Save the date for the 62nd Annual SSC Meeting of the ISTH, to be held May 25-28, 2016 in Montpellier, France.

SSC 2016 will be devoted to the discussion of diagnostic standards, disease nomenclature and classification, and the latest research on bleeding and thrombotic disorders. Topics center around the work of each of the SSC subcommittees, offering dedicated educational and plenary sessions to complement the in-depth presentations of the work in progress by the SSC subcommittees and working groups. SSC 2016 is a must-attend scientific event in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis, and your participation and involvement is vital to advancement of your career.

  • December 1, 2015 - Abstract Submission Opens
  • February 1, 2016 - Abstract Deadline

Three Modules Now Available from the ISTH Course on Venous Thrombosis
 

The ISTH Course on Venous Thrombosis (VT) is a free, accredited course, developed by internationally recognized experts. The full course is scheduled to release a total of nine modules, with three modules currently accessible from the ISTH Academy:

  1. The Coagulation System
  2. Incidence and Risk Factors of Venous Thrombosis
  3. Diagnosis of Deep Vein Thrombosis

The course is free to all. Join the ISTH Academy for free to obtain access or become an ISTH member for complete access to this and other resources from the Academy.

The course is accredited in accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education the the partnership of The Medical College of Wisconsin and the ISTH. This enduring material has been designated for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.

Apply for a Reach-the-World Fellowship; Application Deadline is January 1, 2016

 

The ISTH Reach-the-World Fellowship Program gives junior clinicians and researchers from developing countries (countries classified by the World Bank as low-income, lower-middle-income, or upper-middle-income) the opportunity to study at host institutes known for their expertise in thrombosis and hemostasis.

The program aims to promote knowledge and expertise in one or all of the areas of medical care, laboratory methods and/or research. As part of the program, we provide fellows with financial support for travel, accommodation and living expenses for a fellowship period of up to four months. Application deadlines are January 1 and June 1 of each year.

grant from Bayer Healthcare.

You're Invited to Participate in a Collaborative Study to Calibrate WHO Standards

 

Craig Thelwell and Colin Longstaff of the National Institute for Biological Standards and Controls (NIBSC) issued an invitation to participate in an international collaborative study to calibrate WHO standards for Ancrod and Batroxobin. 

"The assays we are interested in will involve clotting fibrinogen or plasma," write Thelwell and Longstaff. "If you have an established method in your laboratory that can measure clotting times, and would be interested in taking part, we would like to hear from you."

Advanced Training Course in Dubai Welcomed 145 from Around the World

 

Medical professionals from around the world came together for the ISTH Advanced Training Course in Thrombosis and Hemostasis on September 14-17, in Dubai, UAE. Survey reviews indicate the course was a resounding success.

One attendee wrote, "It was helpful for me to learn new things and clear the queries by discussing them with the experts...There were lots of learning opportunities regarding diagnostics and treatment approach practiced by clinicians from different parts of the world."

Read the New DOAC and Hemophilia Compilations from JTH

 

JTH has recently introduced 'Compilations,' a new online feature that goes beyond the traditional publication of articles in any given issue or volume. Rather, these compilations are bundles of articles published in JTH on a particular subject. Compilations are accessible on the JTH website.

The first two compilations are on hemophilia and direct oral anticoagulants. Many other subjects can be considered in the future, and we welcome suggestions from our authors and readers for new compilations. Email jth@abdn.ac.uk with suggestions.

YPTF Names New Chairman, Adds Five New Members

 

The ISTH Young Professionals Task Force (YPTF) has named Mandy Lauw (the Netherlands), as their new chairman, replacing Geoffrey Barnes, who remains a member. The ISTH also welcomed five new members to the YPTF: Marc Blondon (Switzerland), Matthew Harper (UK), Pedro Henrique Fernandes do Carmo Las Casas (Brazil), Rebecca Woodruff (USA) and Jun Wu (China).

The ISTH would also like to thank the following retiring task force members for their service: Luciana Wermelinger Serrão (Brazil), Elena Ristovska (Macedonia), Inolyn Pandjaitan (Indonesia) and Jeffry Tenggara (Indonesia).
