World Thrombosis Day Engages Millions Worldwide with Life-Saving Awareness Message
 

The second annual World Thrombosis Day was celebrated around the world on October 13. More than 320 partner organizations from 70 countries united by developing activities and holding events including: press conferences, workshops and meetings at hospitals, patient education seminars, healthcare professional meetings, exhibits, community activities, marathons, runs, walks and collaborations with local partners to help build awareness.

Online, World Thrombosis Day continued to build momentum. During a one-hour Twitter chat, the campaign recorded more than 30 million impressions. Using Thunderclap, an online platform to magnify your message of awareness, the campaign reached more than 350,000 people around the world. Additionally, the new animated campaign video has collectively received 6,000 views, and hundreds of thrombosis survivors posted "survivor selfies" through social media to raise awareness (see image).

Regarding media, the campaign estimates more than 75 million media impressions with many thousands of media hits and coverage. From handing out leaflets to using banners, bracelets, balloons and T-shirts, all partners stood in solidarity to build awareness and help save lives.

Explore the Online Venous Thrombosis Course Modules
 

The ISTH Course on Venous Thrombosis (VT) is a free, accredited course, developed by internationally recognized experts. The full course will feature a total of nine modules, with three modules currently accessible from the ISTH Academy:

  1. The Coagulation System
  2. Incidence and Risk Factors of Venous Thrombosis
  3. Diagnosis of Deep Vein Thrombosis

The course is free to all. Join the ISTH Academy for free to obtain access or become an ISTH member for complete access to this and other resources from the Academy. The course is accredited in accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education the the partnership of The Medical College of Wisconsin and the ISTH. Each module has been designated for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.

Apply for a Reach-the-World Fellowship; Application Deadline is January 1, 2016

 

The ISTH Reach-the-World Fellowship Program gives junior clinicians and researchers from developing countries (countries classified by the World Bank as low-income, lower-middle-income, or upper-middle-income) the opportunity to study at host institutes known for their expertise in thrombosis and hemostasis.

The program aims to promote knowledge and expertise in one or all of the areas of medical care, laboratory methods and/or research. As part of the program, we provide fellows with financial support for travel, accommodation and living expenses for a fellowship period of up to four months. Application deadlines are January 1 and June 1 of each year. 

The Reach-the-World Fellowship Program is
supported thanks to an unrestricted educational
grant from Bayer Healthcare.

Call for Nominations for ISTH Council Class of 2022

 

The members of the ISTH Council Class of 2016 will retire at the end of the upcoming ISTH SSC 2016 Meeting in Montpellier, France.

Society members are now invited to submit nominations for candidates for the Council Class of 2022.

Serving the ISTH as a Councilor is an important function. Council members lead the Society according to the organization’s mission and values. The Council is the governing body of the ISTH. It authorizes and exercises all of the Society’s corporate powers and oversees its activities. It also sets the strategy, prioritizes objectives and sets the policy framework for the Society. Five members will be elected to the Council, including four at-large seats and one seat designated for a member from a Reach-the-World country.

Nominations will be closed on December 15, 2015.

Introducing the New ISTH Director of Finance and Operations: Jeff Caiola


The ISTH is proud in welcome Jeff Caiola to the ISTH staff as the new Director of Finance and Operations.

Jeff comes to the ISTH with more than 15 years of experience in finance and operations. He most recently served as the Manager of Budgeting and Financial Analysis for IntraHealth International, and he also spent more than three years as the Hospital Administrator/Chief Financial Officer for Karoli Lwanga Hospital in Uganda. 

Jeff holds a Bachelor of Arts from Providence College in addition to a Master of Social Work and Master of City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A native of North Carolina, Jeff lives in Chapel Hill with his wife, Courtney, and three children, Ellis, Marie and Gabriella.
