More than 170 healthcare professionals attended the ISTH Education Course in Sao Paolo, Brazil, at the end of August. The event, titled “The Theoretical and Practical Educational Course ISTH-CLAHT” was organized collaboratively by the ISTH and the Grupo CLAHT (Latin American Group on Thrombosis and Hemostasis) as part of the ISTH’s ongoing education course initiative.

The educational program included three theoretical laboratory courses and one course on clinical research. Two speakers came from the Netherlands (Johanna van der Bom and Suzanne Cannegieter), one from the USA (Leonardo Brandao), and the remaining from Brazil and other Latin America countries.

“The course has been a great success,” said Suely Rezende, one of the course organizers. “There was a good interaction between the speakers and the participants, making the event a good environment to learn, improve skills and exchange ideas. The courses took into account the local needs of participants and the reality of Latin American countries.”

Organizers focused on basic and advanced laboratory topics in order to fulfill the needs of countries which have different levels of advancement in laboratory techniques. For the theoretical clinical research course, the sessions focused on the basic level of study design, bias and confounding in clinical research.

“This course clearly boosted the interest of the participants towards the need to improve their skills in order to propose research projects, critical reading of published material and interpreting results of clinical studies,” Rezende said.

The ISTH works with national societies as well as established experts around the world to offer educational courses customized to the scientific/medical needs, cultures and learning styles of target participants. Focusing primarily on developing countries, the ISTH has held more than 60 education courses in 35 different countries. Learn more here.
