Why you should attend
SSC 2016 is an excellent and affordable scientific event designed for medical professionals at all career levels to participate in plenary and education sessions led by the world's leading experts. Attendees have the opportunity to contribute to the ISTH’s SSC subcommittees that address the immediate and future laboratory and clinical opportunities and challenges in thrombosis and hemostasis.

Contrary to most medical/scientific meetings that mainly provide an overview of current discoveries and therapeutic options, SSC meetings are a vivid platform for scientific and clinical working groups that lay the foundation for future diagnostic and therapeutic breakthroughs that will impact patient care for years to come. The SSC meetings accomplish this through the combined efforts of thousands of experts in the field who discuss practical issues that require the translation of scientific knowledge into reliable methods for the evaluation of normal hemostasis and the diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and bleeding disorders.

SSC 2016 will facilitate this exciting discourse, setting critically important diagnostic and therapeutic standards that allow the field to work together toward real-time and patient-centric solutions

The SSC 2016 program features...
The preliminary SSC 2016 program details are available online. Plenary topics include: The Future of Gene Therapy, Questions Concerning the Scientific Journals, Regulation of Fibrin Clot Structure, New Treatments in Hemophilia and von Willebrand Factor. Education session topics include: New Treatments in Hemostasis, Endothelial Cells and its Disorders, Diagnosis and Treatment in Developing Countries, and New Approaches in Therapy. ISTH/CLAHT Education Course Engages Professionals in Brazil

More than 170 healthcare professionals attended the ISTH Education Course in Sao Paolo, Brazil, at the end of August. The event, titled, “The Theoretical and Practical Educational Course ISTH-CLAHT” was organized collaboratively by the ISTH and the Grupo CLAHT (Latin American Group on Thrombosis and Hemostasis) as part of the ISTH’s ongoing education course initiative.

“The course has been a great success,” said Suely Rezende, one of the course organizers. “There was interaction between the speakers and the participants, making the event a good environment to learn, improve skills and exchange ideas. The courses took into account the local needs of participants and the reality of Latin American countries.”

Participate in the Registry of Pregnancy in Patients Exposed to DOACs

In the summer of 2015, the Registry of Pregnancy in Patients Exposed to DOACs was started to include women who have been pregnant while receiving anticoagulant treatment with a DOAC. The goal is to assess the effects of exposure to DOACs in utero on the fetus and the child on the long-term. It is a multicenter, international, observational cohort study, and the registry is designed to collect both retrospective and prospective data.

Eligibility criteria for enrollment are women with: 1) confirmed use of a DOAC, and 2) a confirmed pregnancy during DOAC use.

This registry is led by Saskia Middeldorp (AMC, the Netherlands) and Peter Verhamme (KU Leuven, Belgium), under the auspices and with the support of the ISTH. If you want to add a patient to the registry, please contact Marjolein Brekelmans at and Suzanne Bleker at for detailed instructions.

CDC Launches Campaign on Theme of World Thrombosis Day

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced a new initiative focused on hospital-associated venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE) – the theme of this year’s World Thrombosis Day.

The HA-VTE Prevention Challenge seeks to find and recognize U.S.-based hospitals, multi-hospital systems, hospital networks, and managed care organizations that are successfully reducing hospital-associated blood clots.

The CDC asks that those with demonstrated success in VTE prevention submit case studies and evidence through the official challenge website. Up to seven of the highest scoring U.S. non-federal hospitals, multi-hospital systems, hospital networks and managed care organizations will be recognized as "HA-VTE Prevention Champions" and will receive a cash award of $10,000.
