Q&A: Early Career Member Explains How He Published an SSC Recommendation

The Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) of the ISTH, through its subcommittees, publishes recommendations regarding practical matters of research standards, methods and nomenclature. The Society encourages early career professionals to get involved in proposing and writing these documents. However, early career professionals may not be aware of participation opportunities, and navigating the task of writing and getting these documents published can be unclear.

To understand the process better, the Early Career Task Force interviewed Geoffrey Barnes, an early career professional who recently co-authored one such document in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH): Recommendation on the nomenclature for oral anticoagulants (JTH 2015;13(6):1154-6).

Enhanced WTD Campaign Provides Partners with More Tools to Engage

Did you know that one in four deaths worldwide are related to thrombosis? You can make a difference by joining the World Thrombosis Day (WTD) campaign, a year-long awareness movement recognized each year on October 13.

This year, the WTD campaign is excited to unveil an exciting new thematic platform and important resources for partners. The new 2016 overarching platform for the campaign is Know Thrombosis, which emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals and patients to become educated about the condition. In addition, a supplementary creative theme will complement the campaign’s messaging and efforts. The complimentary theme of Keep Life Flowing employs a universal analogy to make thrombosis feel relevant and relatable. Despite the fact that thrombosis affects millions of people around the world, it is often not a topic most people think of as they go about their daily lives and it’s complicated to explain.

The 2016 campaign will offer new and refreshed educational and awareness-building resources, all downloadable for partners, including a strategic media program, enhanced communication with partners, advertising, digital and social media resources and much more. You can get started by joining the movement as an official partner; it’s free and simple to sign up!
