Biographies

Susan Kahn

Dr. Kahn is a clinical epidemiologist and internist based at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, where she is the founder and director of the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care. She is appointed as Professor with Tenure in the Department of Medicine, McGill University, where she is Director of the McGill Thrombosis Fellowship. She is co-Director of the CIHR-funded CanVECTOR Network, a Canadian national venous thromboembolism research and training network.

Dr. Kahn’s research interests focus primarily on clinical trials of interventions to prevent, diagnose, treat, and improve outcomes of venous thromboembolism. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Venous Thromboembolism, and previously held a National Clinical Research Scholar award from the Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé (FRQ-S). She has been awarded numerous peer-reviewed research grants from national and provincial funding agencies, including a 7-year CIHR Foundation grant in 2015, and has published more than 220 papers in the field of thromboembolism. In 2016, she was elected to Fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS), considered one of the highest honors for members of the Canadian health sciences community. Also in 2016, she was awarded the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine (CSIM) Dr. David Sackett Senior Investigator Award. This award recognizes excellence in research by a senior Canadian general internist, and is intended to increase awareness of high-quality research by general internists in Canada and to foster such research.

Akhilesh Sista

Dr. Sista is the Section Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at NYU-Langone School of Medicine. His clinical expertise lies in the medical and endovascular treatment of venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). He has given >50 invited talks at international meetings on VTE and has served on national committees, and has authored or co-authored >40 peer-reviewed publications, including VTE clinical practice standards in the medical and radiologic literature. He served as the Chairperson of SIR Foundation’s Research Consensus Panel with experts from 6 disciplines on Submassive Pulmonary Embolism in December 2015 which developed specific research questions to be answered by future research.  He is the National Principal Investigator for Penumbra, Inc.’s ongoing retrospective and prospective trial of the Indigo CAT-8 thromboaspiration device in the setting of PE. His PE research is also translational, having received grant funding from the Radiologic Society of North America to investigate the physiologic consequences of submassive pulmonary embolism in a porcine model.
