Global hemostatic assays
February 20, 2019 13:00 - 14:00 UTC
(8:00 EST/14:00 CET)
Speakers:
Armando Tripodi "Thrombin generation tests"
Yvonne Henskens "Viscoelastic tests"
This presentation will explain the different methods for viscoelastic testing in citrated whole blood (thromboelastography, -metry or resonance) and discuss the indications, benefits and pitfalls of using viscoleastic tests to monitor and treat the bleeding patient.

Armando Tripodi, PhD
Armando Tripodi is a full professor of clinical biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, Humanitas University, and established investigator at “Angelo Bianchi Bonomi” Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, IRCCS Cà Granda Maggiore Hospital, in Milan, Italy. His research is mainly focused on:
- Elucidation of coagulation mechanisms
- Laboratory diagnosis of coagulation disorders
- Standardization and quality control of coagulation tests
- Laboratory control of anticoagulant treatment
Yvonne M.C. Henskens, PhD, MSc, clinical biochemist
Yvonne Henskens is a clinical biochemist who has been working in several university hospital laboratories for the past 19 years. She is responsible for the diagnostic tests concerning hematology, hemostasis and bloodtransfusion in the Maastricht University Medical Centre since 2003. She has special research interest in:
- laboratory predictors and algoritms of bleeding, thrombosis and anticoagulation
- pre- and peri-operative management of bleeding and coagulopathies
- platelet function testing
Active in the boards of the dutch societies for hematological laboratories and clinical chemistry. Involved in training and education of medical and life sciences students, laboratory technicians and residents. Founder of a re-training programm on hemostasis and transfusion for technicians and clinical biochemists for the south-east part of The Netherlands.
Alex Gatt
Dr. Gatt is a clinical haematologist after undergoing specialist training in the UK. He holds the rank of Associate Professor and Head of Department of Pathology at the University of Malta. He followed a research MD on the utility of Global Assays of Coagulation in Anticoagulation, Thrombotic Disorders and Liver Disease at the University of Sheffield under the mentorship of Professor Michael Makris. After his research, he was appointed as Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Free Katherine Dormandy Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre. Here he fostered his interest in global assays of coagulation by studying liver disease patients together with his haematology, hepatology and anaesthetic colleagues. In 2010, Dr. Gatt started working in Malta and has since been leading the clinical and research aspects of Coagulation Medicine and am the Director of the Malta Centre for Bleeding and Thrombotic Disorders. The latter is an EU accredited Haemophilia Treatment Centre. As a Fulbright Scholar in 2013, he researched the use of thromboelastography in patients undergoing liver transplantation at the Mayo Clinic Rochester Minnesota, US. He has mentored several undergraduate and postgraduate students on haemostasis projects and is especially interested in Thrombin Generation and thromboelastography/thromboelastometry. He sits on the editorial boards of Thrombosis Research and the Malta Medical Journal.
