Biographies

Joost C. M. Meijers

Joost C. M. Meijers is Professor of Experimental Vascular Medicine at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He is head of the laboratory of Molecular Hemostasis at Sanquin, and staff member of the Department of Experimental Vascular Medicine at the Amsterdam University Medical Centers. He was trained as a biochemist with a focus on blood coagulation at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and has worked previously at the University Medical Center Utrecht and the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. His research group aims to (better) understand the mechanisms of initiation and regulation of coagulation and fibrinolysis in order to improve the treatment of patients with bleeding or thrombosis.

 Apart from his research he is also involved in teaching, and he has set up a national training program for coagulation diagnostics. Joost Meijers is Secretary of the Supervisory Board of the ECAT (External quality Control of diagnostic Assays and Tests with a focus on Thrombosis and Haemostasis). He is the immediate past chairman of the SSC Subcommittee on Factor XI and the Contact System, and is currently chair of the WHO-ISTH Standards Liaison Group.

 

Saskia Middeldorp

Saskia Middeldorp is professor of medicine at the Department of Vascular Medicine of the Amsterdam University Medical Centers, University of Amsterdam. She leads the clinical thrombosis and haemostasis research lines of the Department. Her present research focuses on several aspects of hereditary and acquired thrombophilia, women’s issues in thrombosis and haemostasis, and the clinical evaluation of new anticoagulants. She leads the investigator-initiated ALIFE2 and Highlow randomized controlled trials.

Currently, Saskia Middeldorp is chair of the INVENT-VTE network and Associate Editor of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. In December 2016, she held the Ham-Wasserman Lecture and received the accompanying award in recognition of pioneering work in inherited thrombophilia at the annual American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting in San Diego. She is member of the Venous Thrombosis Guideline Coordination Panel and chair of the Thrombophilia Chapter of ASH. Saskia Middeldorp has co-authored the Pregnancy chapter of the ASH pregnancy guideline in 2018 as well as the 9th Edition Antithrombotic Guidelines of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) in 2012.

Saskia supervises 8 to 10 PhD students and has co-authored over 230 peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters, and reviews manuscripts for international scientific journals.
