Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc.- Open Access Science is Accessible Science

  • Discuss concepts of utilizing open access to enhance equity in dissemination of research results.
  • Review programs being used by Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis toward this goal.

Kaia Motter- The Evolving Ecosystem of Open Access Publishing

  • Orient the participants in the rapidly evolving ecosystem of the Open Access publishing market to gain a better understanding of what influences growth in Open Access publication output. 
  • Highlight recent funding and policy trends, the impact of regional differences, and open research and transparency initiatives.

Mary Cushman
Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., is Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Vermont.  She is a hematologist in the Department of Medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center, where she is Director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Program, which sees more than 900 new patients annually.  She is a Board Director of the University's Cardiovascular Research Institute.  

Cushman is experienced in scientific publishing, starting as an editorial board member for Archives of Internal Medicine in 2004-10, then as Associate Editor for JTH from 2007-15, where she handled papers independently.  She is the current Editor-in-Chief of Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH), ISTH's open access journal.

Kaia Motter
Kaia Motter has over 15 years of publishing experience, including three years with a small trade book publisher and 13 years managing and launching scientific journals in various subject areas at Elsevier and Wiley. Kaia is currently a Publisher in the Open Research group at Wiley, which is responsible for growing the company’s Open Access publishing business. In addition to advising on Open Access strategy and development, she supports the expansion of the Open Access program in the health sciences specifically. 

Susan Kahn
Susan Kahn, M.D., M.Sc., FRCPC, is a clinical epidemiologist and internist based at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where she is the founder and director of the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care.  She is appointed as Professor with Tenure in the Department of Medicine, McGill University, where she is Director of the McGill Thrombosis Fellowship.  She is also co-Director of the CIHR-funded CanVECTOR Network, a Canadian national venous thromboembolism research and training network.  She is currently an Associate Editor for Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH), ISTH's open access journal.
