World Thrombosis Day: Stop Blood Clots and Save Lives
Share |

As scientists, researchers and health care professionals, you know that thrombosis is the common disorder that is responsible for the top three causes of cardiovascular death worldwide – heart attack, stroke and venous thromboembolism – or VTE. Yet, many of these deaths are preventable.

To address this important health issue, October 13, 2014, marks the inaugural World Thrombosis Day. Led by the ISTH, with oversight by renowned medical and public health experts, World Thrombosis Day is an educational initiative with the goal of reducing the significant disease burden caused by thrombosis.

And, it is professionals like you who will help us achieve that goal.

The ISTH and partners of the World Thrombosis Day movement invite you to participate in activities taking place around the world to mark this very important day. To see a growing list of events, visit the World Thrombosis Day website.

World Thrombosis Day is an annual day that will also energize a collective drive to increase awareness and action through educational activities for the public and health professionals throughout the year, year to year.

At the heart of the movement are more than 160 thrombosis and hemostasis societies, patient advocacy groups, medical/scientific organizations and other interested parties from around the world who seek to:

  • Increase the awareness about the prevalence and risks from thrombosis
  • Reduce the number of undiagnosed cases
  • Increase the implementation of evidence-based prevention
  • Encourage health care systems to implement strategies to ensure “best practices” for prevention, diagnosis and treatment
  • Advocate for adequate resources for these efforts and increased support for research to reduce the disease burden from thrombosis
  • Ultimately save lives

While this is an ambitious agenda, World Thrombosis Day spotlights the urgency of raising awareness today and, ultimately, turning awareness into action on many fronts.

ISTH and participating organizations are very grateful for support from the partners of World Thrombosis Day.

We welcome you to get involved today by visiting and connecting online via Facebook and Twitter.
