The mission of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) is to advance the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and bleeding disorders. The Society is dedicated to transformative scientific discoveries and clinical practices, the development of young professionals and the education of physicians, scientists and allied health professionals wherever they may live. The team at ISTH initiates and promotes education and outreach initiatives, research activities, scientific meetings, peer-reviewed publications, expert committees and the development of standards allowing a common language and approach to basic and clinical science all over the world, including 3,800 members in more than 93 countries.

Director of Finance & Operations

This position offers a qualified candidate the opportunity to support the growth of this mission driven organization by ensuring the internal business operations of ISTH, including financial processes, international meetings, budget development, planning and analysis, risk management, systems and processes, office facilities management, and human resources. This individual with need finance and operational experience with a proven track record of creative problem-solving and change management.

Broadly defined, the Director of Finance and Operations will act as the “second in command” for the organization but with a strong financial management and internal business operations focus. Reporting to the ISTH Executive Director and supervising the Society’s Finance Administrator, he or she will be a hands-on, participative, strategic and operational thought-partner working closely with the Executive Director, the ISTH Management Team and the ISTH Executive Committee. Further, the Director will serve as the principal liaison to the Treasurer and Finance Committee to support the ISTH’s growth and strategic and programmatic goals with strong financial and operational systems.

The Director of Finance and Operations will be expected to fulfill the following key responsibilities:


  • Develop financial strategies and operations for the organization and its international programs, activities and meetings.
  • Oversee the maintenance of and optimize an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures, ensuring operation within generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and in accordance with all federal, state/provincial and local legal, fiscal and other financial reporting requirements for the United States as well as other countries that the Society does business in from time to time.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, lead the budgeting and controlling process including forecasts, variance reporting, cash flow needs, and investment strategy impacts, and identifies areas requiring attention and areas of possible improvement.
  • Work directly with the Treasurer, Finance Committee and the Executive Director to effectively develop and present financial reports (including dashboards), analysis and strategies to the ISTH leadership and management team.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual year-end financial reporting and management review/audit process; serve as principal liaison with external auditors and the Finance Committee; assess any changes necessary.
  • In close cooperation with ISTH’s Director of Meetings; recommend, implement and oversee the respective financial and legal set up for the ISTH’s international meetings, including all financial processes, cash flow management, foreign currency management, financial/legal risk management and adherence to applicable local and international laws and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with the ISTH Management Team members to identify their needs and seek solutions; provide advice on the financial implications of the various programs and activities.
  • Oversee the selection and collaboration with the organization's auditor, payroll vendor, bank, legal advisors and other professional partners.

Strategic and Business Operations:

  • Assess, develop and improve systems and processes, evaluating and improving office and systems infrastructure to support key capabilities as required for future growth.
  • Work in close collaboration with the ISTH Executive Director on developing business models and other critical tools for executive decision making related to ISTH programs and initiatives.
  • Improve, standardize, develop and maintain operational systems, processes, policies, tools and templates in support of ISTH’s mission, including enhanced management reporting, information flow and management, and organizational planning.
  • Oversee risk management activities through processes and procedures as well as analysis of, input in and procurement of comprehensive insurance coverage and contracts.
  • Develop, direct and manage policies, priorities and practices relating to office services, office facilities, asset procurement and replacement, security, purchasing and records management.
  • Review and negotiate financial terms of contracts, including analysis of out-sourcing versus hiring and purchasing versus leasing decisions.
  • Manage relationships and deliverables with external suppliers that support operations and human resources functions including federal, state and local compliance.
  • Ensure ISTH obtains and maintains all necessary and most beneficial business licenses, sales and income tax exemptions, fundraising and other registrations required to operate in the US and all countries where ISTH does business.


  • Advise leadership and senior management on human resource matters.
  • Maintain a sound and current personnel system, including written policies and procedures, oversee benefits procurement and administration, conduct periodic studies and analysis, and prepare reports.
  • Oversee the compliance with all federal, state, and local laws pertaining to employment and employee benefits, record keeping, employee communications and reports.
  • Oversee the correct and timely management of all human resource programs including health and employee benefits, and professional development/organizational management training programs.


  • A minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in managing finances and business operations with progressively increasing responsibility (including experience with contracts and grants), preferably including specific experience in the nonprofit sector.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or associated disciplines; MBA/CPA preferred.
  • Legal, audit, compliance, business planning, resource development, and strategic evaluation experience preferred.
  • Experience in working in an international environment and dealing with foreign currencies and legal, financial and accounting practices a strong preference.
  • Negotiation and financial management skills, including budgeting.
  • Experience managing people.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient with QuickBooks (and/or other financial management software), MS Excel (advanced proficiency), Word and PowerPoint; thorough understanding of database systems.
  • Knowledge of association management software systems a plus.
