Factor XI and the Contact System

This Subcommittee is focused on basic research, physiology, diagnostics and pharmacology of blood coagulation factor XI and the plasma contact system.

When blood is exposed to surfaces, a series of proteolytic reactions are initiated that lead to formation of a blood clot. The surface-mediated reactions, collectively referred to as contact activation reactions, involve activation of the plasma serine protease zymogens factor XII, factor XI, and plasma prekallikrein and cleavage of high-molecular-weight-kininogen to release the inflammatory mediator bradykinin. In addition to blood coagulation, contact activation initiates several important plasma host-defense systems in vitro, including kinin generation, fibrinolysis, and complement activation.

To understand functions of factor XI and contact system proteins in health and disease

  • To understand modes of regulation and structure-function correlation for these proteins
  • To understand associated reactions such as those of the kallikrein-kinin and complement systems

If you are a member of the Society and would like to know how to participate in the work of this group, please join the group to receive updates on activity or submit an Expression of Interest Form to the Chairman or any of the Co-Chairmen. We would be pleased to learn of your interest.
