In conjunction with the 40th Turkish Hematology Congress, the ISTH sponsored an educational course for more than 750 attendees at the Titanic Convention Center in Antalya, Turkey on October 24.

“This year’s most important educational event was the joint sessions organized with ISTH,” said Muzaffer Demir, the General Secretary of the Turkish Society of Hematology (THD).

The course featured two sessions. ISTH Council Chairman Nigel Key and Muhit Özcan chaired the first session, which featured the topics: Concepts of the Coagulation System, Current Concepts of the Platelet Functions, and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation. Demir and Kaan Kavakli chaired the second session which featured the topics: Diagnosis and Treatment of VTE, Antithrombotics in Clinical Practice, and Critical Roles of Hemostasis in Cancer.

During a press conference, THD also promoted World Thrombosis Day. Key informed the media about World Thrombosis Day along with Demir, THD President Teoman Soysal, and THD Vice President Hale Ören. THD translated the World Thrombosis Day press release into Turkish, and more than 50 news items were published as a result of the conference.

As the only official society for hematologists in Turkey, THD boasts a membership of over 800 at home and abroad. It is one of the most active and oldest societies in the country. At the Congress, there were 14 scientific conference sessions, seven satellite symposium session, six meet the expert sessions and thirteen oral presentation sessions on the conference program. A total of 539 manuscripts were submitted to the Congress on 17 different topics. Of these, 72 selected abstracts were presented at oral sessions while others were presented at poster sessions.

After this successful event, ISTH and THD leaders agreed to work on more collaborations in the future. To learn more about hosting an educational course, click here.
