The ISTH awarded three Reach-the-World Fellowships in March 2015, including one fellowship awarded to Hannah Omunakwe, a hematologist at Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. With this award, Omunakwe join Kings’ College Hospital in London, UK to receive both clinical and laboratory training in hemostasis.

After realizing that many clinicians in her hospital had low awareness of thromboprohylaxis, Omunakwe reached out to other researchers for guidance. “I got in touch with some researchers (by email) whose works I had seen, and they gave me good counsel and articles that could serve as a guide to me,” she said. “I later realized that many of them were members of the ISTH. So, I joined the ISTH and many of the resources on the website helped to broaden my view. I felt that getting this Fellowship to train and study would equip me with better clinical, laboratory and research skills, and put me in a better position to teach and train other colleagues.”

Omunakwe hopes to improve her skills in diagnosing and treating disorders of hemostasis, and she also hopes she will be able to use her new knowledge to train others in Nigeria. “I am most excited about the opportunity to work with and learn from experts,” she said. “This opportunity means so much to me because I will have the privilege of acquiring international training under renowned experts and can in turn reach out efficiently and effectively to people in need of care and training in this area. I appreciate ISTH for ‘reaching the world’ by helping to train me.”
