The World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board has renewed the status of the ISTH as one of only about 200 nongovernmental organizations in official relations with WHO, citing the important contributions and partnership from ISTH.

“I would like to take this opportunity to convey my thanks to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis for its work with WHO,” wrote Gaudenz Silberschmidt, WHO director of partnerships and non-state actors. “I hope that our activities continue to be as fruitful.”

The WHO and ISTH have worked together to establish and disseminate standards in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis through the activities of the Scientific and Standardization Committee. ISTH also regularly contributes statements to WHO and World Health Assembly (WHA) issues and discussionssuch as the recent 68th WHA regarding the need for increased attention to thrombosis in order to reduce the global burden of noncommunicable diseases.

With this renewed commitment, the relationship between the ISTH and WHO will remain active through 2019, when it will be reviewed again, according to the WHO three-year schedule for reviews.
