ISTH Statement on the U.S. Presidential Executive Order on Entry into the United States

As the leading global scientific organization for advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and bleeding disorders, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (Inc.), based in the United States, is deeply concerned about the recent Executive Order issued by the President of the United States and its potential impact on thrombosis and hemostasis research, patient care, and international scientific collaboration.

With more than 4,000 members in nearly 100 countries, the global ISTH community is dedicated to transformative scientific discoveries and clinical practices, the development of young professionals, and the education of physicians, scientists and allied health professionals wherever they may live.

The scientific and therapeutic advances in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis would not have been possible without dedicated and open collaboration across borders.  Many important ISTH activities are currently ongoing that involve collaborators from around the world.

The ISTH believes that policies which restrict movement run the risk of impeding the ability to teach, study, carry out research and/or provide care for patients that could jeopardize future scientific progress that is made possible by international collaboration. The ISTH calls on leaders around the world to help eliminate barriers to scientific exchange and medical education.

ISTH continues a steadfast commitment to our global scientific community, and pledges to welcome and respect all members, participants and partners. We are closely monitoring the possible effects of travel restrictions by any government on current and future ISTH meetings, educational activities, and scientific programs in all respective countries. We will also continue to evaluate ways to participate in activities to educate respective governments about the impact and adverse effects of such restrictive policies to sustain and accelerate advances in science and care for patients with bleeding and clotting disorders.

As an international organization, we value our global heritage and community, and will continue to champion international collaboration and the open exchange of ideas and perspectives.
