ISTH members have approved a revised and amended version of the Society’s bylaws by a vote of 343 to 2. According to a previous set of bylaws, the Society can amend, repeal or create new bylaws by the affirmative vote of two-thirds of members voting. The voting period ended on June 1, 2018. The updates are now reflected in the bylaws online

The revised bylaws have been modernized and bring the Society in line with best practices. The changes reflect important necessary legal and organizational changes that allow the Society to continue to successfully evolve, operate efficiently and effectively, and impact the field of thrombosis and hemostasis.

The main changes of the Bylaws include:

  • Addition of elements of the Bylaws that are currently missing or are not sufficiently defined but are critical to the organization as well as addition of legally required articles or sections.
  • Standardization of nomenclature: Most notably that the ISTH Chair of Council will from now on be named ISTH President (which is much more commonly used through the world of associations).
  • Changes to as well as the provision of greater clarity and transparency and definitions of responsibilities and composition of certain committees and leadership positions as well as their roles and functions based on the changing operations of the organization.
  • Focus on strategic and governance issues and removal of provisions in the Bylaws that are primarily operational, which should be under the purview of the ISTH Council as the main elected body and representatives of the membership, allowing the organization to better react to changes in the field and make decisions.

We thank all ISTH members for their active participation in this important vote. View the bylaws here.
