CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA – July 11, 2018The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), a global not-for-profit advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and bleeding disorders, today announced the appointment of Jeffrey Weitz, MD, as ISTH President for the 2020-2022 term. Weitz serves as Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University and Executive Director of the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His 30-year career spans the spectrum from basic research in the biochemistry of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis to animal models of thrombosis and hemostasis and on to clinical trials and health outcomes research.

In this role, Weitz will work most closely with incoming ISTH President, Claire McLintock (New Zealand) and support the ISTH Council to provide executive direction of the activities of the Society in accordance with the Society’s Bylaws. Following his role as President-Elect for two years, Weitz will assume the role as ISTH President at the ISTH 2020 Congress in Milan, Italy.

“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Weitz for this important leadership role,” said Ingrid Pabinger, MD (Austria), outgoing ISTH President. “His outstanding scientific reputation in the field, leadership experience and track record in training the next generation of clinicians, basic scientists, and allied health professionals make him an ideal leader to serve as the next ISTH President-Elect and ultimately President. His leadership will help to continue to increase the impact of the Society on the advancement of the field of thrombosis and hemostasis across the globe.”

Weitz holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Thrombosis and the Heart and Stroke Foundation J. Fraser Mustard Chair in Cardiovascular Research. His research is highlighted in more than 500 medical and scientific publications. Weitz has been serving in a variety of leadership roles in scientific administration, education and publishing in Canadian and international academic institutions, foundations, professional societies and publications.

“It is an honor to be appointed to ISTH President for the 2020-2022 term and to have the opportunity to build upon the success and innovation of the Society,” Weitz said. “I look forward to continuing the strong global leadership of the ISTH, including keeping science at the core of our activities and further strengthening ISTH’s educational offerings that will advance clinical and laboratory research and ultimately improve patient care.”
