CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA – July 11, 2018 — The World Thrombosis Day campaign today announced that LEO Pharma A/S has joined the campaign as a Global Patron in support of its global awareness initiative to reduce death and disability caused by thrombosis, also known as blood clots. Observed on 13 October, World Thrombosis Day, led by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), mobilizes 1,500 partner organizations to hold more than 9,000 awareness events worldwide each year. Last year alone, the campaign reached an estimated 2.7 billion people in an effort to shine a spotlight on the burden of this condition.

LEO Pharma A/S is a leading global pharmaceutical company dedicated to helping patients worldwide who suffer from potentially life-threatening and disabling diseases, including venous thromboembolism (VTE). Blood clots are one of the leading causes of death in patients with cancer. Approximately one in ten patients with cancer dies from a blood clot related event 1, 2 showcasing the importance for LEO Pharma A/S to take part in this worldwide initiative.

"LEO Pharma A/S is proud to support the important work of the World Thrombosis Day campaign,” said Xavier Bertin, Vice President, Global Business Unit Thrombosis of LEO Pharma A/S. “We have provided products for thrombosis patients for more than 50 years with a specific focus on cancer associated thrombosis the past eight years. This new collaboration underscores our passion for helping patients."

One in four deaths worldwide is related to thrombosis, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and patient empowerment to ask for a risk assessment 3, 4. With the tagline, Know Thrombosis, the campaign encourages the general public, healthcare professionals, and key decision makers to know and take action on the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of the condition.

“As we recognize the fifth anniversary of World Thrombosis Day, we are delighted to welcome LEO Pharma A/S to the campaign as a Global Patron,” said Gary Raskob, PhD, Chairman of the World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee. “LEO Pharma A/S’ partnership is critical to our efforts in raising awareness of VTE and its prevention and treatment, which ultimately saves lives.”
