The Leading Global Thrombosis and Hemostasis Organization Met in Ireland to Showcase Latest Research and Innovation

CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, August 29, 2018 – The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) held its 64th Annual Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) Meeting from July 18-21, 2018, in Dublin, Ireland, at The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD).

The meeting recorded a 54 percent increase in attendance compared to the previous highest attended ISTH SSC stand-alone meeting in 2016, welcoming more than 3,100 clinicians, researchers, educators, healthcare professionals and industry partners from across the globe.

Building on the success of previous meetings and activities, this year’s meeting also attracted 58 percent more abstracts submissions, 52 percent more exhibitors, increased its sold exhibition floor space by 57 percent and featured 30 percent more corporate symposia than in any previous ISTH SSC stand-alone meeting.

ISTH SSC 2018 was also the last SSC stand-alone meeting as the ISTH transitions to a yearly congress format starting in 2019 in Melbourne, Australia.

“The success of this year’s meeting can be attributed to a number of aspects,” said Lisa Astorga, CMP, Director of Meetings, ISTH. “Not only does ISTH continue to attract and present the best science in the field of coagulation but the organization has worked diligently to improve the overall attendee and exhibitor/sponsor experience, implementing changes that create better scientific discourse, more networking and overall a stronger return-on-objective (ROO) and return-on-investment (ROI) for participants and industry partners alike. In addition, Dublin was the ideal destination that provided an attractive venue for our meeting as an outstanding business tourism city that also offers a state-of-the art convention center and a quality infrastructure that allows organizations to focus on providing the value-add.”

Fáilte Ireland supported ISTH Meeting Chair Dermot Cox in his bid to bring the event to Dublin, through its Conference Ambassador Programme which supports individuals who want to host an international conference in Ireland, and provides assistance and financial support at every stage of the event.

“Three out of four international association conferences that come to Ireland do so at the direct invitation of a local Irish member or host, something which Fáilte Ireland’s Meet in Ireland maximises through our Conference Ambassador programme,” said Paul Mockler, Head of Commercial Development at Fáilte Ireland. “Fáilte Ireland is delighted that Dermot was able to secure the ISTH SSC 2018 meeting, which was hugely successful with more than 3,100 delegates coming to Dublin compared to an initial estimation of 1,800. The work and dedication of conference ambassadors like Dermot, supported by our own Business Tourism team, delivers a real economic benefit to this country - with this event alone worth over €5 million.”

Stephen Meehan, Chief Executive of The CCD commented, “We were delighted to host ISTH SSC 2018 and to work with the team, Conference Partners and the Local Ambassador, Dermot Cox, Associate Professor, RCSI.” He added, “It is a real testament to the attractiveness of Dublin city as a conference destination that the numbers increased so greatly and we were thrilled to be part of such a successful event.”

Complementing ISTH’s inhouse meeting management, the organization partnered with Conference Partners International to provide a host of on-the-ground and onsite services to organize the successful event.
