CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, January 8, 2019 – Today the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis(ISTH) announced plans for a yearlong 50th anniversary celebration. The anniversary marks the official formation of the ISTH in 1969 at the 15th Annual Meeting of the International Committee on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ICTH) in Bath, UK.

Already at its inception, the Society’s focus was blood coagulation and hemorrhagic disorders, as well as platelet function and regulation, the mechanisms of thrombosis, fibrinolysis and thrombolysis and the urgent problems of thromboembolic disorders. The Society appointed Fritz Koller of Switzerland as its President and Sol Sherry of the United States as Chairman of the newly-formed ISTH Council. Almost 200 scientists joined the Society that year.

The Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC), formerly known as the ICTH, became a permanent committee of the Society with independent authority over its scientific program after the creation of the ISTH. The SSC now consists of 20 subcommittees that recommend standardized methods and nomenclature in specific areas of thrombosis and hemostasis. The SSC and its subcommittees meet annually as part of the ISTH Congress.

Today, the ISTH continues to be the leading thrombosis and hemostasis related professional medical-scientific organization in the world with more than 5,000 members in 100 countries. Dedicated to transformative scientific discoveries and clinical practices, the ISTH focuses on the development and education of physicians, scientists and allied health professionals wherever they may live.

“It is exciting to think that 50 years ago a small group of dedicated scientists and physicians had the forethought to put into motion a Society that has grown into the leading organization that it is today,” said Claire McLintock, ISTH President. “I’m very proud of the accomplishments of the Society and our colleagues around the world. From scientific discoveries to the development of new diagnostics and treatments, the ISTH continues to be a catalyst for capacity building in developing countries, early career education and fostering a global community of experts focused on improving outcomes for patients around the world.”

The ISTH promotes education, outreach and research initiatives. In addition, the Society holds a yearly Congress, publishes two peer-reviewed publications and supports public awareness activities including World Thrombosis Day, clinical practice guidelines and the development of standards that allow a common language and approach to basic and clinical science all over the world.

To kick-off the Society’s 50th anniversary, the ISTH collaborated with the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH), to highlight this important milestone through a special January 2019 commemorative cover design and special editorial. The anniversary will be celebrated through regular contributions in the journal, historic snapshots in other ISTH communications and social media posts as well as at the congress. Additionally, an exclusive 50th anniversary logo will be utilized throughout the year. The anniversary will also be recognized publically at the ISTH 2019 Congress.
