Chapel Hill, NC, USA - February 13, 2020 - The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), a global not-for-profit advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to thrombosis and hemostasis, announced today the appointment of Flora Peyvandi, M.D., Ph.D., as ISTH President for the 2022-2024 term. Peyvandi is a professor of internal medicine at the University of Milan and the Director of the Angelo Bianchi Bonomi, Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at the Internal Medicine-Hemostasis and Thrombosis Unit of the IRCCS Maggiore Hospital in Milan, Italy.

For the next two years, Peyvandi will fill the role of President-Elect, working closely with incoming ISTH President, Jeffrey Weitz, M.D., to support the ISTH Council and provide direction on the activities for the Society in accordance to the Society’s bylaws. Following her role as President-Elect, Peyvandi will assume the role of ISTH President at the ISTH 2022 Congress in London, England.

“We are proud to announce the appointment of Flora Peyvandi to this pivotal role at the ISTH,” said outgoing ISTH President Claire McLintock, M.D. “Her long history of outstanding research and leadership in the thrombosis and hemostasis community will propel the Society forward with tremendous momentum. Her guidance of education and global community-building will positively impact the lives of patients around the world.”

Peyvandi has dedicated her career to bringing state-of-the-art treatments and technologies into her research to offer patients cutting-edge therapeutic approaches. Her research, as highlighted by her numerous publications, has focused on the investigation of molecular mechanisms of coagulation disorders and on the immunogenicity of coagulation products. Peyvandi has served in many leadership roles across different international scientific societies focused on bleeding and clotting disorders. At the ISTH, Peyvandi has served on the Executive Committee and the Guidelines and Guidance Committee, and was chair of the Education Committee. She is also Co-Chair of Gene Therapy in Hemophilia: an ISTH Education Initiative as well as Co-Chair of the ISTH 2020 Congress in Milan.

“It is an honor to be elected ISTH president for the 2022-2024 term,” Peyvandi said. “Our plan is to build on the Society’s past successes and focus on keeping science at the core of all activities while strengthening the educational offerings in ways that will enhance clinical and laboratory research as well as patient care. This will ensure strong global leadership of the ISTH for years to come.”
