International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Cancels Annual Congress Due to COVID-19 Impact

Chapel Hill, NC, USA, March 25, 2020- The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) has canceled the XXVIII Congress of the ISTH, originally scheduled to take place in Milan, Italy from July 11-15, 2020. The decision was made on March 25 based on the latest scientific data available regarding the transmission and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In lieu of an in-person scientific exchange, the ISTH will organize a virtual meeting to share the latest research and education.

“For weeks, we have closely monitored updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, and have worked with our Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and local health authorities in Italy while thoroughly exploring all possible options,” said ISTH President Claire McLintock, M.D. “This decision comes after the number of coronavirus cases in Italy, and elsewhere, have continue to escalate as well as increasing global travel restrictions have been put in place. We continue to stand in solidarity with our LOC, the Italian thrombosis and hemostasis community and the people of Italy during this particularly difficult time.”

While the ISTH 2020 Congress in Milan, Italy, is canceled, the ISTH remains fully committed to the continued dissemination of science and education in thrombosis and hemostasis. With plans already underway for an ISTH 2020 Virtual Congress, the ISTH will focus on offering the latest thrombosis and hemostasis science, research and education to the global community in a virtual format. The ISTH will host a robust educational and scientific program. As always, all submitted and accepted ISTH 2020 abstracts will be published online in the journal Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH) and can be presented – at a minimum – as e-posters. The Society will also still invite late-breaking abstracts.

“We know that many of our members and partners will be disappointed, and we share that sentiment. This was not a decision made lightly,” said ISTH President-Elect Jeffrey Weitz, M.D. “We have never canceled an ISTH Congress in over 50 years since its inception, including our decision to continue with our ISTH 2011 Congress in Kyoto, Japan, after the devastating tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster. However, this is a unique crisis requiring an unprecedented response.”

While still months away, ISTH leadership made this decision to cancel ISTH 2020 now in order to provide clarity, diminish fears and to allow members, attendees and partners to focus on combating the COVID-19 pandemic in their respective communities.

The annual ISTH Congress is the flagship meeting for the ISTH, and a leading scientific meeting in the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis. With more than 8,000 clinicians and scientists expected to attend from over 100 countries around the world, the Society stood by its duty of care to all by canceling. The next ISTH Congress will be held from July 17-21, 2021, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S., and will continue the tradition of presenting groundbreaking science to the global thrombosis and hemostasis community to benefit patients around the world.
