CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, (July 9, 2020) — The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) will host its first-ever Virtual Congress from July 12-14. The ISTH 2020 Congress will present the latest science and education in the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis. More than 15,000 scientists, researchers and physicians representing over 130 countries will attend from their homes and workspaces globally. Presentations will cover basic, translational and clinical research, and discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic advances in bleeding and clotting disorders.

“While we are disappointed that the ISTH 2020 meeting cannot be held in Milan as originally planned, we are delighted to share a virtual scientific experience with more colleagues than ever from around the world,” said congress Co-Chair Dr. Flora Peyvandi. “The program will represent the best and most up to date science that the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis have to offer.”

ISTH 2020 received more than 2,000 scientific abstracts, which will be presented as either online posters or oral communications. Poster presenters have the option to add a voice recording to their poster to help explain their research. Abstracts cover the most important scientific topics in thrombosis and hemostasis such as arterial thromboembolism, coagulation and natural anticoagulants, diagnostics and OMICs, fibrinolysis and proteolysis, hemophilia and rare bleeding disorders, pediatrics, platelets and megakaryocytes, role of the hemostatic system in cancer, inflammation and immunity, thrombotic microangiopathies, vascular biology, venous thromboembolism, and women’s health. Full abstracts can be viewed at abstracts.isth.org.

“We are very excited to connect clinicians, scientists and researchers from around the world with an interest in thrombosis and hemostasis as part of this Virtual Congress,” said ISTH President Dr. Claire McLintock. “The ISTH 2020 Congress features a range of groundbreaking research, innovative offerings and scientific advances to improve the lives of patients worldwide. At the moment, a digital platform is the only option to further advance exchanges of science, research and education at a global level without a physical meeting.”

Originally scheduled to take place in Milan, Italy, the ISTH canceled the in-person Congress due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure continuity of education, ease and equal access to research, and to continue to further advance the field, the ISTH Congress Co-Chairs Peyvandi and Dr. Marco Cattaneo along with the Local Organizing Committee worked closely with the Society to change to a Virtual Congress, free to attend, to virtually bring together the global thrombosis and hemostasis professional community. The Virtual Congress will also include a virtual exhibition space for pharmaceutical, diagnostic and medical device companies as well as partner organizations, and will feature supported symposia and product theaters on the most recent diagnostic and therapeutic innovations in the field.
