Maria Sabater-Lleal, a Ph.D. research associate at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, was awarded the EHA-ISTH Joint Fellowship at the European Hemotology Association (EHA) Congress in June. As part of her fellowship, Sabater-Lleal will spend two years working with the University of Washington (USA) on a project titled "Novel regulatory pathways for FVIII and vWF."

The aim of her research will be to identify novel genetic associations to better understand the molecular mechanisms regulating coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) and von Willebrand factor (vWF), as intermediate phenotypes associated with thrombosis risk, and ultimately identify novel target pathways that could improve  prevention and treatment of the downstream thrombotic disease outcomes.

The EHA-ISTH Fellowship program was a collaboration between the ISTH and EHA. It was intended to support the study of physiology of coagulation, bleeding or thrombosis with a maximum funding duration of two years. Applications are no longer being accepted.
