Regional Training Center - Brazil

The Regional Training Center (RTC) program is funded by the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), which enables long-term partnerships between emerging centers in economically developing countries and mentoring centers in the high-income countries.

Through this program, the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital (Hospital das Clínicas) of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil is an emerging center collaborating with the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), in Leiden, Netherlands as a mentor center. The six-years program will include training professionals involved in the Thrombosis and Hemostasis field, enabling the exchange of students and teachers among the institutions involved, develop educational courses, internships and partnerships in research projects.

The program has three levels of two years of collaboration, progress and advancement. To advance to the next level, the center in training must send an annual report to ISTH, detailing activities and programs in progress. After successfully completing the 6-years’ program, the developing center will be classified by the ISTH as a "Regional Training Center", being able to act as a mentor for other emerging centers and region.

To improve the development and advance of the emerging center in research, education and patient care in the field of Thrombosis and Hemostasis, enabling this center to act as a reference center in the region.

Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais
LUMC is a modern university medical center for research, education and patient care with a high quality profile and a strong scientific orientation. Its unique research practice, ranging from pure fundamental medical research to applied clinical research, places LUMC among the world top universities. This enables LUMC to offer patient care and education that is in line with the latest international insights and standards and helps it to improve medicine and healthcare both internally and externally.

The Department of Clinical Epidemiology has made important scientific contributions in the area of Thrombosis and Hemostasis such as the discovery of factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A mutations and many other risk factors for thrombosis through LETS, MEGA, CANAL, POT-KAST, NEO and other studies. Furthermore, it is involved in studies into risk prediction and management of thrombosis. Other areas of interest of the department are: renal disease/dialysis, fertility, arthrosis, obesity, methodology.
The University Hospital of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) is a university, public and general hospital that carries out teaching, research and patient care. Faculty of Medicine of UFMG is the largest Medical course in Brazil as it admits 320 medical students yearly. UFMG is the top 3rd university in Brazil.

The University Hospital is a reference center for the State of Minas Gerais for the diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic disorders, with its anticoagulant and thrombophilia outpatients’ clinic as well as inpatients’ hospital care. There is a coagulation laboratory with a dedicated team, and a research laboratory within Faculty of Medicine. Most staff working in the field of Thrombosis and Hemostasis have postgraduate education, with many of them being trained abroad. The Postgraduate Program on Internal Medicine (PrPGCASA) has a specific topic for the development of Thrombosis and Hemostasis projects and research.
